A Smarter Way to Teach Students to
Skim & Summarize Tricky Texts

Highlighting isn’t studying.

Neither is rereading the same paragraph three times and hoping that eventually it sticks.

Learning from a text is a surprisingly complex skill. So why do we keep telling students to "just read the chapter" instead of teaching them HOW?! Especially when reading loads keep growing and AI summaries are just a click away.

The good news? We CAN teach students a smarter way.

I've developed a straightforward process for skimming and summarizing tricky texts. Educators in the Lab often tell me, "Wow! I wish I'd known how to do this in college!"

And for the first time ever, I'm teaching a masterclass on it!

Or join the Lab for $349 — the masterclass is included.

 What You'll Learn

Join us for a hands-on exploration of how to teach students to work strategically with tricky texts. We’ll briefly unpack why reading is such an executive-function-heavy task, then get practical about what to DO about it.

We'll explore:

Teach Students to Skim with Purpose.
Learn how to get the lay of the land, find what matters, and pay attention with intention—while reading surprisingly few words.

Find, Track, and Summarize Key Ideas.
Practice distinguishing main ideas from supporting details, and taking notes that help students track and organize what they’re learning as they read.

Chart a Book on One Page.
Learn one of Lab members’ favorite Anti-Boring Tools for turning a complicated reading into a visual, organized, one-page summary.

Help Students Practice the Process.
Explore how coaches and teachers can practice these skills WITH students so they can eventually use them independently.

Partner with AI—Without Outsourcing the Learning.
Explore where AI can support the skimming and summarizing process—and where students still need to do the thinking themselves.

And we won’t just TALK about it. We’ll actually DO it.

Bring a nonfiction book you’ve been meaning to read—or use an article Gretchen provides. We’ll practice the process together, from the first skim all the way through creating your own one-page book chart.

Educators Love Our Trainings — Here's Why:
Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What if I can’t attend live?

No problem! All registrants get the full replay of the 3-hour masterclass, so you can watch on your own time.

2. Is this just for academic coaches, or will it be useful for classroom teachers too?

Definitely not just for coaches! Beyond the Highlighter is for teachers, tutors, coaches, learning specialists, SLPs, OTs, educational therapists, and others who help students learn how to learn.

3. What ages is this masterclass relevant for?
Beyond the Highlighter is especially relevant for middle school through college, but the framework is intentionally simple and flexible. It can be stepped up or down for younger learners or adults—and adapted to the students you work with.

4. Will the tools support neurodivergent learners?
Yes. We’ll pay particular attention to what can make reading dense or tricky texts difficult for students with ADHD and other neurodivergent brains—and how to make skimming, finding key ideas, and summarizing more manageable without adding MORE complicated steps.

 5. What’s included in my registration?

Your $195 registration includes the 3-hour masterclass, the replay, downloadable resources, and an invitation to our 2-hour follow-up Q&A on November 12 at 3:00 p.m. PT.

6. I’m already a member of the Anti-Boring Learning Lab. Do I need to pay?
Nope! This masterclass is included in your membership. Check the Learning Lab dashboard for how to join live or access replays.

7. I’ve taken one of Gretchen’s previous trainings. Will this be new for me?
Yes! Some foundational ideas may be familiar, but Beyond the Highlighter goes much deeper into how students can work strategically with tricky texts. We’ll explore purposeful skimming, identifying and tracking key ideas, creating one-page book charts, practicing these skills with students, and using AI in ways that support rather than replace the thinking.

8. Do you offer CEUs or a certificate of completion?

We don’t offer official CEUs for teachers or the International Coaching Federation at this time. As a small company, it’s a bit too complex for us to register with every state and organization. However, you can earn a certificate of completion for 5 professional development hours by participating in both the 3-hour masterclass and the 2-hour follow-up Q&A. To qualify, you must either attend both sessions live or watch both replays and leave substantial, meaningful comments demonstrating your engagement with the material. Many educators are able to submit the certificate to their schools or use it for continuing ed credit. You can also post it to LinkedIn to celebrate your accomplishment—we’ll cheer you on!

9. Can I register a group?
Absolutely. Registering 1–4 people? Choose your quantity at checkout. For 5+, email office@antiboringlearninglab.com for group pricing.

10. Do you offer refunds?
Because this is a digital professional development experience and all registrants receive access to the recording, registration is non-refundable. Please reach out with any questions before purchasing so you can make sure it’s a good fit. Thanks for understanding—it helps us keep our small business sustainable.
